Understanding the IVF Journey: What to Expect
Starting an IVF journey is a significant emotional and physical step towards parenthood. At Lafemme Healthcare, we believe that being well-informed is the first step toward a successful outcome.
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), particularly In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), has revolutionized the way we approach infertility. But for many couples, the technical jargon and multi-step process can feel overwhelming. In this article, we break down the stages of a typical IVF cycle.
1. Ovarian Stimulation
For about 8 to 14 days, the woman takes injectable medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. During this time, we perform regular ultrasounds and blood tests to monitor follicle development.
2. Egg Retrieval
Once the follicles reach a mature size, a "trigger shot" is given. Approximately 36 hours later, a minor surgical procedure is performed under sedation to retrieve the eggs from the follicles.
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and for many, IVF is that courageous step towards building a family."
3. Fertilization & Embryo Culture
The retrieved eggs are fertilized in our laboratory using the partner's or donor's sperm. We monitor the resulting embryos as they develop over the next 3 to 5 days.
4. Embryo Transfer
The best quality embryo(s) are selected and transferred into the uterus. This is a simple procedure, similar to a pap smear, and usually requires no sedation.
